The Dutch boating market: fertile ground for electric propulsion.
Water sports and recreational boating are very popular in the Netherlands, with over 3 million participants, or 16% of the population. This country, which is thirteen times smaller than France and has a density of 533 inhabitants per km² (Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics, CBS) – one of the highest ratios in the world – is famous for its land reclaimed from the sea and is characterized by a vast network of waterways attracting many boating enthusiasts. Among the most common types of boats are "sloeps" and sailboats. Boating is a key sector, particularly for leisure, with a strong tradition of sailing, motorboating, and water activities.
The Netherlands is one of Europe's leaders in energy transition. The country has adopted ambitious policies aimed at reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. As part of this transition, the boating sector benefits from incentives to adopt greener solutions.
In South Holland, where there is a high concentration of recreational boaters, subsidies were granted between 2023 and 2024 to owners of recreational boats wishing to convert their fossil fuel-powered boats to electric. The subsidy was intended to cover 25% of the total conversion costs, up to a maximum of €4000.
Dutch companies in the nautical sector benefit from two national subsidies, the Environmental Investment Deduction (MIA) and the Arbitrary Depreciation of Environmental Investments (Vamil), for their investments in environmentally friendly technologies and equipment, such as lead-free batteries, electric propulsion systems, and charging points for electric boats. These tax incentives allow companies to deduct the costs of green investments from their taxable base more quickly, thus offering tax benefits to encourage sustainable investments.
Local regulations also encourage the reduction of polluting emissions on inland waterways, notably through the establishment of low-emission zones. For example, the city of Amsterdam has introduced restrictions for diesel-powered boats in its canals. The Memorandum on Waterways in Amsterdam plans to allow only emission-free boats in the city center from 2025 and throughout the Amsterdam inland waterway area from 2030, as well as the installation of more charging stations. However, the ambition of the project is currently clashing with the reality on the ground, with many users criticizing the tight deadlines imposed by the city and the lack of resources allocated to ensure sufficient charging point coverage.

The transition to electric: between ecological aspirations and challenges for Dutch boaters.
For Dutch boaters, the transition to electric boats is perceived as both a major step forward and a source of practical concerns. Their expectations in terms of sustainability are undeniably growing, so much so that more and more boat owners and boaters are looking for ecological solutions for their nautical activities. Among the solutions considered for greener navigation, electric or hybrid propulsion systems are the most preferred, as they represent a silent and emission-free alternative.
This trend is part of a broader movement towards sustainable mobility, where the demand for electric vehicles in sectors such as automotive, cycling, and public transport also influences the nautical sector.
The transition to electric boating brings its share of challenges. The charging network, currently under development, can deter some boaters who want to navigate without constraints, for example. To overcome these obstacles, subsidies and collaborations between manufacturers, authorities, and nautical federations play a key role in improving infrastructure and technologies.
For manufacturers, the challenge is significant: to provide solutions that bring real added value through electric power. Many engine brands are emerging and positioning themselves in this market.
This is the case for TEMO, which offers solutions adapted to the real needs of boaters. Specialized in the propulsion of light vessels, the French brand completely redesigns the electric motor by focusing on ergonomics, weight, and portability. This first step into electric with TEMO offers boaters a powerful and accessible alternative, ideal for slow-speed navigation on canals and coasts. Easy to recharge on a simple household outlet, these motors offer a fluid, silent, and maintenance-free experience, thus facilitating the adoption of this new technology.
