Looking to power a small sailboat or replace your old combustion engine? Today, an electric motor for sailboats is an increasingly popular choice among recreational sailors. Quieter, easier to use and requiring very little maintenance, electric propulsion is ideally suited to sailboats up to 9 metres.

But how do you choose the right electric motor? How much power do you need? What range can you expect? And should you opt for an outboard or a more integrated propulsion system? Here is our guide to help you make the right choice.

Why Switch to Electric Propulsion on a Sailboat?

On a sailboat, the motor is rarely intended to run for hours at a time. It is mainly used to:

  • leave or enter harbour;
  • manoeuvre when docking;
  • transit through locks;
  • make headway against a current;
  • provide propulsion when the wind drops.

For these applications, electric propulsion offers a number of advantages.

A more enjoyable sailing experience: Silence completely changes the experience on board.

No vibrations and no petrol fumes: you can continue to enjoy being on the water even

 when the motor is running.

Simple operation: An electric motor starts instantly. No fuel to handle, no pull cord and no difficult starting.

Minimal maintenance: Unlike a combustion engine, there are no oil changes, carburettors or complex engine servicing requirements.

Electric vs Combustion Engine: Which Should You Choose?

On a small sailboat, the motor is often used for less than an hour per outing. In this context, electric propulsion now meets the needs of most recreational sailors.

Criteria Combustion engine  Electric motor
Noise Yes Very Low
Vibrations Yes Virtually none
Fumes Petrol fumes None
Starting Pull cord or key Instant
Maintenance Regular Very limited
Energy source Petrol Electric charging
Ease of use Average Excellent

If you sail primarily under sail and use your motor for manoeuvring or short passages, electric propulsion is now a particularly attractive alternative.

How Much Electric Motor Power Do You Need for a Small Sailboat?

For a lightweight sailboat up to 9 metres, 1 kW — roughly equivalent to a 3 hp combustion engine — is ideally suited to typical propulsion requirements, such as harbour manoeuvres, entering and leaving anchorages, or motoring in light winds.
At these low speeds, performance depends primarily on available torque and drivetrain efficiency rather than maximum rated power. Thanks to its instant torque and high efficiency, a 1 kW electric motor delivers power to the propeller from the first turn, providing smooth, efficient and precise propulsion.
A sailboat's speed is also naturally limited by its hull speed. Beyond this point, adding more power delivers virtually no additional speed and simply increases energy consumption.

Two Ways to Electrify a Small Sailboat

Every boat — and every sailor — has different requirements.
Some sailors want an outboard that is easy to install and remove. Others prefer a more integrated propulsion system, with better weight distribution and remote controls.
That is why TEMO offers two complementary solutions.

TEMO·1000: The Simplicity of an Electric Outboard

The TEMO·1000 is a 1 kW electric outboard designed for sailboats up to 8 metres.
It is the ideal solution if you want a motor that remains easy to carry and requires no permanent modifications to your boat.

Key Benefits

  • Quick installation with no complex modifications.
  • Portable and easy to carry.
  • Can be removed after every trip.
  • Direct steering using the motor itself.
  • Can be shared between several boats.

What Makes the TEMO·1000 Different

  • Removable cassette battery with no cables.
  • Retractable tiller with steering lock.
  • Patented 360° rotating motor mount.
  • Height-adjustable shaft.
  • Full recharge in just 5 hours 30 minutes, with 12 V charging available.
  • Rudder-inspired design for easier manoeuvring, even at low speeds.
  • Enhanced waterproofing for reduced maintenance.
  • Certified Origine France Garantie — guaranteed French origin.
  • Wide range of accessories available.

OUTPOD·1000: The Best of a Pod Drive, with the Simplicity of an Outboard

The OUTPOD·1000 is TEMO's own 1.3 kW electric propulsion system, combining the advantages of a pod drive with those of an outboard.

The concept is simple: the batteries and controls are installed on board, while the motor itself remains compact, retractable and fully removable.

This gives you a more integrated propulsion system without the constraints of a conventional fixed pod drive.

The Advantages of a Pod Drive

Thanks to its design, the TEMO OUTPOD·1000 offers:

  • improved weight distribution, with the batteries installed inside the boat;
  • remote cockpit controls;
  • a lightweight motor on the transom (12 kg);
  • configurable range to suit your sailing programme;
  • a low-maintenance brushless motor.

The Advantages of an Outboard

The OUTPOD·1000 also retains all the simplicity of an outboard:

  • plug-and-play installation;
  • simple transom mounting;
  • lifts vertically out of the water in seconds;
  • 180° motor rotation;
  • easy removal for winter storage or maintenance;
  • zero drag under sail once the motor is raised.

It is therefore equally well suited to new sailboats and existing boats, including repowering projects.

What Range Can You Expect from a 1 kW Electric Motor?

Range depends on several factors:

  • the boat's weight and hull design;
  • cruising speed;
  • weather conditions;
  • current.

In practice, an electric motor is primarily used for manoeuvring and short passages. For this type of use, the available range is more than sufficient.

With a 1 kW electric motor, range varies depending on the battery configuration. At TEMO, all the batteries offered are interchangeable, making it easy to adapt your range to your sailing programme.

The TEMO·1000 comes with a cassette battery providing 45 minutes of runtime at full power. The OUTPOD·1000, meanwhile, can be paired with a 2.3 kWh rack-mounted battery, providing up to 1 hour 50 minutes of runtime at full power. Compatible batteries from TEMO partners are also available for sailors requiring even greater range.

Sailors Who Have Chosen a TEMO Electric Motor

Preserving a Traditional Boat

Jean-Louis wanted to add auxiliary propulsion to his SEIL sail-and-oar boat without modifying the hull.
Today, his TEMO·1000 electric outboard allows him to make headway against the current on the Loire, cruise in silence and remove the motor after every outing.

“I feel like I can cruise around without disturbing anyone.”

Quick Installation on a Skellig

The TEMO·1000 can be fitted to the transom of the Plasmor-built Skellig 1.4 in just a few moments. Its retractable tiller allows the helmsman to keep control of the boat's rudder while benefiting from smooth, silent propulsion.

Gazelle: When the Wind Drops, the Motor Takes Over

On the Gazelle built by Marine Composite, the TEMO·1000 electric outboard naturally takes over for short passages, manoeuvring and entering harbour — without noise or fumes.

Requin: Powering a Sailboat Weighing Almost Three Tonnes

After choosing a TEMO·450 electric motor for his tender, Vincent fitted his Requin with a TEMO·1000.
“I can reach 4.5 knots with no problem. I use it every time I go sailing. It's incredibly practical and quiet.”

More Integrated Propulsion on a Muscadet

In Saint-Malo, Geoffrey Matazczynski uses an OUTPOD·1000 on his Muscadet. He particularly appreciates the straightforward installation, the centrally positioned batteries and the comfort of silent propulsion.

An Alternative to a Combustion Engine on a Loup

Angus was looking for a reliable, quiet propulsion system that could be easily removed. The OUTPOD·1000 now gives him efficient propulsion while allowing him to raise the motor clear of the water when sailing.

Why Choose TEMO?

Since its creation, TEMO has developed electric propulsion solutions designed around the real-world needs of recreational sailors.
Whether you choose the TEMO·1000 or OUTPOD·1000, you benefit from:
