This summer, we embarked on a tour of France in collaboration with our partner stores located all along the coast. It was the perfect opportunity to film as many videos as possible outdoors.
Many of you have asked us questions about the motor's range. Thibaut pushed the motor to its limits, draining the battery completely in the port of Douarnenez !
After using the electric motor for about an hour during the demo , you can see on the battery gauge that there is only one blue bar left .
| When accelerating fully, the battery indicator flashes, which can lead you to believe the battery is running low. Fortunately, the TEMO·450 has a reserve charge (like a car). This is indicated by the red bar that outlines the gauge. With an average battery life of one hour, a blue bar represents approximately fifteen minutes of use. |
Once on reserve, you can feel the TEMO·450 slowing down slightly, but it keeps pushing! Thibaut records between 2.5 and 2.8 knots . After 7 minutes, the engine continues to propel the dinghy at its hull speed of around 3 knots.
| Of course, when you reach the reserve, you really need to get closer to shelter : a port or a beach, for example. At 10 minutes flat, even without pushing the TEMO·450 to its limit, only a red bar remains on the display. |
Like any electric motor, the gauge indicates the battery level in real time by measuring the battery voltage . The faster you accelerate, the higher the measured voltage. It is therefore advisable to decelerate or stop to check the battery level when the motor is off. This is why there may be a drop or gain of one bar for a few seconds when changing gears .
After 10 minutes, you can feel the motor starting to struggle. Thibaut records a speed of around 2 knots with a headwind. Finally, after exactly 12 minutes and 13 seconds, the battery is depleted. It still managed to last 1 hour and 12 minutes!
Even after removing and reinserting the magnetic key, the TEMO·450 won't turn back on. This time it's for sure, it's time to get out the oars! In short, it takes about 12 minutes and 30 seconds for the last indicator light to go out and the battery to be completely drained.
