Electric boating: TEMO's vision

The TEMO adventure, which began in 2018, had already resulted in the delivery of over 1,500 of our electric motors by the end of 2021. Today, more than 5,000 TEMO users are navigating the world . But such an innovative product inevitably generates a flood of questions, many unknowns, and even sometimes a bit of misinformation. So, we'll explain everything in this article.

Thermal equivalence and precision.

Lightweight (5 kg) and therefore very easily transportable , TEMO·450 is the ideal ally to reach your lovely boat waiting for you on its mooring or at anchor.

No bad smell, nor risk of leaks in your cockpit or car trunk.

You will very quickly forget the internal combustion engine which, at the same power, weighed a good 15 kg. Yes, because while mathematically the TEMO·450 is equivalent to 0.7 hp, in reality, its thrust reaches 12 kg, and with its higher torque, its more efficient propeller designed by Naval Group and its power available immediately, it is more like the equivalent of a 1.5 to 2 hp .

Because while an electric motor has an efficiency greater than 90% , a combustion engine is never used at its maximum speed . Therefore, it delivers at best only 70% to 80% of its rated power. And another 10% is lost between the crankshaft and the propeller (transmission, gearbox, cooling pump, etc.).

Better still, the torque of the TEMO·450 is immediately available , whereas you have to reach at least 60% of the maximum speed on a combustion engine.

The proven efficiency of the electric motor.

But once your whole little family is on board the 2.50m dinghy, halfway between the bank and your favorite boat, a fairly common doubt still comes to mind: what if the battery fails me along the way?

In reality, there's no more risk of running out of battery than of running out of gas . So, while good seamanship dictates always carrying a pair of paddles, keep in mind that the TEMO·450's battery life averages one hour , and a light gauge provides real-time information on the remaining range. Of course, the lighter your finger is on the throttle, the longer your electric motor will propel you.

Based on average usage, this equates to three days of cruising without needing to refuel, or more precisely, without having to recharge. In this regard, forget about gas stations, jerrycans, and complicated transfers. The TEMO·450 recharges in 3.5 hours using a standard electrical outlet or even on board thanks to its 12V charger/converter.

Autonomy, simplicity, security… what else ?

Moored to the skirt of the most beautiful boat in the world, yours, the moment of transfer has arrived.

TEMO·450 will be better off on board, in its protective cover. ...at the bottom of the annex. But whoever has never let anything slip between the skirt and the annex, throws the first lady of the swimmers at me, imagine!

One last point worries you, however. While you are delighted with the use of this electric propulsion system, including its ecological aspect (total absence of noise and emissions), you are concerned about the future of its lithium-ion battery.

Won't it end up polluting more than it saved during its use?

This is a hotly debated topic, particularly concerning automobiles, which obviously contain a much larger volume of batteries. Furthermore, their production is very energy-intensive, making it imperative to maximize their lifespan and, even more importantly, to recycle them effectively. The issue therefore extends far beyond your TEMO·450, but at the same time, as a device perfectly in tune with the times, it has undergone a serious eco-design process .

How distant those days of starting problems, chokes, pulling cords that could dislocate your shoulder, fuel quality issues, backaches, foul-smelling fumes, and oily trails seem now.
